Client:                    Serco Rail Technologies Ltd

Project:                  Asset Inspection Train (AIT)

In 2007, Tubelines Ltd commissioned our client Serco Rail Technologies Ltd in Derby to turn an existing 4 car 1972 Tubestock ex passenger vehicle into an engineering train that was capable of both measuring and monitoring the London Underground infrastructure.

OTDS were engaged on the project from the beginning, providing our client with support in all aspects of the Mechanical Engineering Designs required for the integration of the numerous Instrumentation Systems onto the vehicle.

OTDS were also responsible for all the mechanical designs and installation drawings for the following bespoke areas of work:

  • Electrical cupboards
  • Air conditioning unit support frameworks
  • Storage cupboards
  • Power supply unit support framework and installation design
  • Vehicle bodyside modifications
  • Under-frame structural modifications
  • Unique sliding Instrumentation rack system

The initial design requirements were to 3D model all the vehicles from the existing design drawings, after which OTDS systematically integrated the new bespoke systems, equipment and instrumentation onto each car. Over 600 drawings were produced on the project along with all the 3D models of the vehicles and systems.

Other services that OTDS have provided include supporting the project with visualizations, installation / manufacture support and liaison with specialized engineers.

Working closely with our client we have helped in the delivery of a very complex, demanding but extremely rewarding project.
